What is precast concrete?

Precast concrete is concrete that's cast into a reusable form and cured at a plant, then trucked to the job site ready to install. Cast-in-place concrete, by contrast, is poured and cured on site.

Is precast concrete better than poured-in-place concrete?

For many underground and site structures, yes. Because precast is made in a controlled plant environment, the mix, reinforcement placement and curing are consistent from piece to piece, with tighter tolerances and fewer defects than field-poured work.

Does precast concrete save time on a project?

Yes. Precast pieces are made off site while your crew does site work, so there's no waiting on forms, weather or on-site curing. Products arrive ready to set, which shortens the schedule.

How long does precast concrete last?

With proper design and installation, many precast concrete structures are built to perform up to 50 years or more with minimal maintenance. Precast resists weathering, fire, pests and impact better than many alternative materials. Note that the environment in which the precast is placed can have an impact on the longevity and durability of the solution.

Is precast concrete more expensive?

Often it costs less overall. The piece price can be similar to or higher than raw materials for a pour, but precast cuts on-site labor, shortens the schedule, avoids weather delays and reduces long-term maintenance.

What precast concrete products does Border Precast make?

We make manholes and manhole cones, flat tops, catch basins, septic tanks, distribution boxes, grease traps, concrete grade rings, K-rail barriers, retaining blocks and parking blocks. We also carry manhole frames and covers, manhole steps, and joint and coating materials. See the full list on our Product List page.

What manhole sizes do you offer?

We make precast manholes in 48", 60", 72", 96" and 120" diameters. Matching flat tops come in the same five diameters, and we make manhole cones for 48" manholes (32" and 36", with T-Loc options) and 60" manholes (36").

What's the difference between bare concrete and T-Loc / coated manholes?

Bare concrete manholes are standard precast with no interior liner, typical for storm drain systems. T-Loc and coated manholes have a protective liner or coating on the inside to resist corrosion from sewer gases, which is commonly specified for sanitary sewer lines. Every manhole and flat top size we make is available both ways.

Do you sell manhole frames, covers and steps?

Yes. We carry 24" 1295 and 30" 1296 standard frames and covers in sanitary sewer and storm sewer, also a 24" gasketed frame and cover (5900 series), and manhole steps. We also carry 24" 1295 lids in the City of Yuma Logo.

What sizes of catch basins do you make?

Our standard precast catch basins are 18" x 18" x 48", 24" x 24" x 48", and 60" x 60" x 48". Other custom sizes.

What are concrete grade rings used for?

Grade rings stack under a manhole frame to raise the cover to finished grade. We make 24", 30" and 36" grade rings in 4" and 6" heights, plus a 24" x 6" septic grade ring for bringing septic tank access up to grade.

Do you sell joint sealant and coatings?

Yes. We stock ConSeal joint sealant (1" strip, 1" roll. 2" is not stocked), Sewer Gard 210 coating kits, so you can get sealing and coating materials with your precast order.

Do you make K-rail barriers and retaining blocks?

Yes. We make precast K-rail barriers for traffic control and work zones, 2.5' x 2.5' x 5' retaining blocks for walls, bins and site separation, and precast parking blocks (wheel stops).

Septic tanks and grease traps

What size septic tanks does Border Precast sell?

We make precast concrete septic tanks in 500, 1,000, 1,250, 1,500 and 2,000 gallon sizes. We also make distribution (D) boxes, inspection plugs and 24" x 6" septic grade rings to complete the system.

Why choose a concrete septic tank over plastic?

Concrete septic tanks are heavy enough to resist floating when groundwater is high, hold their shape under soil and vehicle loads, and last for decades.

What size grease traps do you make?

We make precast concrete grease traps (grease interceptors) in 500, 1,000, 1,250, 1,500 and 2,000 gallon sizes for restaurants, commercial kitchens and other food service sites.

How do I know what size grease trap my business needs?

Grease interceptor size is set by your local plumbing code and wastewater utility, usually based on fixture count or kitchen flow. Your engineer, plumber or the city's pretreatment program can give you the required size, and we can supply the matching unit.

Does Border Precast make custom precast concrete?

Yes. Beyond our standard product list, we design and cast custom precast pieces for specific projects, such as non-standard catch basins, vaults, boxes, structures and other site-specific shapes. Precast can be formed, textured and finished to fit almost any design without giving up strength.

How do I get a quote for a custom precast project?

Contact us with your project details and we'll build out a plan and estimate with you. Call 928-726-0393, email sales@borderprecastinc.com, or use the quote form on our Contact Us page, where you can attach drawings and files.

What information should I send for a custom precast estimate?

The more detail you send, the faster we can price it. Helpful items include:

  • Drawings, plans or sketches with dimensions
  • Project specs or engineering requirements (load rating, coatings, openings, penetrations)
  • Quantity needed
  • Project location and whether you need delivery
  • Your target date for delivery or install
  • Your name, phone and email

Don't have all of that yet? Reach out anyway. We can help you work through the design.

Can you help design a custom precast piece?

Yes. As a dedicated precast company, we bring engineering knowledge and hands-on support from initial design through installation. We stay in contact with you until the job is complete.

Why don't you list prices for custom precast?

Every custom piece is different. Size, reinforcement, openings, coatings, quantity and delivery distance all change the price, so we put together each estimate from your specific plans.

Quotes, ordering and delivery

Are quotes free?

Yes. Quotes are free for both standard products and custom precast. Request one through our Contact Us page, by phone at 928-726-0393, or by email at sales@borderprecastinc.com.
